MARTIAN DAWN 1.1 (A SCENARIO FOR CIV II USING FANTASTIC WORLDS) JULY 2002
by BENJAMIN BALL

NOTE: This update fixes a couple of minor unit glitches and adds a few events to make the
scenario a little tougher.

Thanks for downloading my scenario. This is the first scenario I have produced for public
consumption, and I hope you enjoy it. It has entirely new graphics, sound, text, and some
changes to the basic game effects, but at heart it is very similar to a normal game of Civ II.
You must conquer all of Mars or build a ship to return to Earth. Because this scenario is
very similar to a normal game, because I have updated the pedia and game text, and because I
have an arthritic condition called Reiter's Syndrome that makes typing painful, I'm not going
to write a long, pretentious readme.txt for this scenario. Read the introductory text for the
background, check the fully functional pedia for changes and unit information, and just play
the scenario. There are some surprises lurking!
There are a just a few things I would like to emphasize:
1) The map of Mars is flat and centered on the northern ice cap. The southern ice cap is not
shown. Storm Basins are impassable to ground units (ocean).
2) Storm Basins and any square marked with a drop of water can be used for irrigation. By far
the most valuable resource on Mars is cornucopium, which is good for both shields and trade!
3) The governments have been changed quite a bit. Representative governments are better than
usual relative to militant ones, and the militant ones (especially Fundamentalism) are not as
useful as you might expect. Though it is possible (with difficulty) to conquer Mars, the real
goal of the scenario is to return to Earth.  If you're usually a war monger, give peace a chance;
you might like it! See the pedia for the updated scoop on the governments.
4) Future Tech comes much sooner than usual, as research grinds to a halt for some time. An
event will be needed to get science moving again, but when it does... wow!
5) There are only a few events in the scenario, but some of them are real doozies. Just be
prepared for surprises and weirdness. And don't play the Fugees (you were warned!)
6) See the pedia and the game text for everything else you need to know. Good luck!

I welcome any questions or comments about this scenario. Email at miles2gob4isleep@hotmail.com.

CREDITS
The gorgeous unit icons, much better than I could possibly do myself, are from the Dune units
collection by Reno (s-ren@wanadoo.fr). They were just begging to be used in a scenario, and I
heeded that call. The Secret Project icon was taken from Foster's Jump Trooper (along with a
number of other graphics and sounds), and I created the Id Monster from an Ice Planet graphic.
I also used graphics and sounds from the following fine sources:
Mark Laanen's Earth 3000.
Ultimate People Collection and Desert Planet by John Valdez.
Fantastic Worlds and Test of Time CD-ROM.
If I left anyone out, let me know and I'll correct the oversight. Enjoy!
